Boeing has issued layoff notices to 438 members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) this week as part of a broader effort to reduce its global workforce by 10%, according to KIRO Newsradio.

Aerospace firm Boeing, one of the largest employers in the St. Louis region, is laying off more than 100 local workers.

Boeing started issuing layoff notices Wednesday to 17,000 employees to cut 10% of its workforce in an effort to shore up the aerospace giant's shaky finances.

The approximately 17,000 employees included in the cuts were notified this week and are expected to leave the company in mid-January, Boeing said. The cuts, which come after a labor union strike, equate to 10% of its workforce.
