After the game, Payton reflected on his own tenure as a Giants assistant from 1999 to 2002 and said he told Giants owner John Mara that he wished the Giants hadn’t replaced Wilson with Dart as their starting quarterback until after playing the Broncos.
Although the Broncos had been getting to the quarterback at a historic pace, the Giants needed one more score to put it away. The defense needed a turnover, and they got one. Dart forced a throw over the middle, and linebacker Justin Strnad picked it off, returning it to New York's 18-yard line. Denver would score a touchdown four plays later.
The New York Giants blew leads of 19-0 and 26-8 on Sunday afternoon at Empower Field at Mile High. They even managed to blow a 32-30 lead with 37 seconds remaining, falling to the Denver Broncos, 33-32, on a last-second game-winning field goal in one of the worst collapses in franchise history.
