According to the 11 p.m. update Sunday, Aug. 17, from the National Hurricane Center, Erin was roughly 960 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, moving west-northwest at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of nearly 130 mph.

Hurricane Erin weakened to a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph as its outer bands pounded the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico with gusty winds and heavy rains early Sunday.
