Many schools will remain closed for a fifth day on Friday as ministers warn the impact of severe weather across northern Scotland will “continue to be felt in the coming days”. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of snow and ice covering much of Scotland which comes into force at 8pm and runs until midday on Friday.
Around 1-3cm of snow is likely to accumulate widely, with 5-8 cm possible in places like the North York Moors throughout Saturday, according to the Met Office. The snow showers will gradually become lighter and less frequent during Saturday evening, and move offshore overnight.
A yellow weather warning for heavy snow and wind covers much of Scotland for the first four days of the new year.
Temperatures are expected to drop as low as minus 6C in parts of rural Scotland and just below freezing more widely overnight, the Met Office said.
