US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on aluminum and steel are motivated mostly by concerns that China is flooding the global market and harming US manufacturing, said a former trade adviser to the White House.

The White House published three separate Executive Orders that imposed blanket tariffs on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese imports. The Executive Orders are all similar in scope, with each having a unique justification for imposing the associated tariffs.

Mexico, China and Canada were the largest importers for the US in 2023, and the first targets of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Germany, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, India, Ireland, Italy and France may be next.
