Cuba is at risk of losing vital airline service as it prepares to run out of aviation fuel, with at least one major carrier, Air Canada, suspending all service to the island as a result.

TORONTO (AP) — Air Canada said Monday it is suspending service to Cuba because of a shortage of aviation fuel on the island. Canada’s largest airline said it took the decision after the Cuban government announced aviation fuel would not be available at Cuban airports as of Tuesday.

Cuba's president is offering to hold talks with the U.S. without preconditions, even as both nations exchange warnings.

MOSCOW, Feb 9 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Monday that the fuel situation in Cuba, which has unveiled a plan to protect essential services and ration fuel, was critical and that U.S. attempts to "suffocate" the island's economy were causing many difficulties.

The Trump administration, which has tightened the U.S. chokehold on Cuba by cutting off foreign oil, is betting that this is the Cuban communist revolution’s last year.

The aid is largely meant for those living in Cuba's eastern region, which Hurricane Melissa struck late last year.
