U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for his government to re-examine Afghan immigrants who entered the United States during the former president Joe Biden's administration.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said it was halting the processing of immigration requests for Afghan nationals after the National Guard shooting.

The National Guard troops, and the alleged shooter, are alive and being treated in hospital. The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is an Afghan national who entered the US during the country’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. He later applied for asylum, which was granted by the Trump administration in April of this year.

In 2019, Trump secretly flew from his Mar-a-Lago holiday to spend Thanksgiving with U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Trump skipped his 2020 Thanksgiving trip to Mar-a-Lago following his election loss and remained at the White House.
