Many researchers now consider wild water buffalo to be a different species (Bubalus arnee). The wild ones can reach 10 feet in length and weigh 2,600 pounds, making them even larger than most bison.

Most people don’t associate Hong Kong with wild animals, let alone ones as big as water buffalo. However, there’s more to Hong Kong than the densely populated Kowloon.

IUCN estimates the population of the wild water buffalo to be 2,500, with its numbers on a constant decline. The wild populations are found in Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Thailand.

"Officials said Thailand's only population of wild water buffalo — made up of 69 individuals — is found in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani Province," the Miami Herald reported.
