The New York Rangers finally scored some goals on home ice at Madison Square Garden, but it didn’t matter, as they suffered an 6-5 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
Adam Gaudette and Macklin Celebrini both scored early first-period goals at Madison Square Garden, with Celebrini’s goal at the 6:17 mark giving the Sharks a two-goal lead. Just before Celebrini’s goal, Sharks winger Ryan Reaves and Rangers forward Matt Rempe renewed acquaintances in a marquee fight between two of the NHL’s true heavyweights.

Skidding Flames, Rangers desperate to find a win
The New York Rangers kick off a four-game road trip Sunday against the Calgary Flames with their season already at a crossroads. The floundering Rangers have managed just one win in their last six games and are coming off a dispiriting 6-5 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
What’s been encouraging for the Sharks is seeing Will Smith and William Eklund raise their games as well. Smith’s four-point night against the New York Rangers, capped by his goal in overtime, matched a career-high, and Eklund has four points in his last two games. He had eight shots in his first four games and 14 shots in his previous four.
