Auburn has decided to recognize seven more of its football teams as national champions.

The school announced that it would be retiring Newton’s No. 2 number after he led the football program to a national title in 2010 and won the Heisman Trophy. He is one of the best players in Auburn history and is only the fourth Auburn player to ever have his number retired, joining Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan, and Terry Beasley.

“Cam is one of the greatest players to wear an Auburn uniform and it is only fitting that he has his No. 2 jersey retired,” said Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze.

But now, after years of angst, there’s a growing belief that Auburn is on the verge of a turnaround under third-year coach Hugh Freeze.

After all, the Tigers have endured four consecutive losing seasons — their longest such skid in nearly eight decades — and failed to find much consistency since Tommy Tuberville’s heyday 20 years ago...
